Wes Streeting has welcomed the prospect of running against Andy Burnham in a Labour leadership contest after quitting as Health Secretary to plunge Sir Keir Starmer‘s premiership into a fresh crisis.

In his resignation letter, Mr Streeting criticised the ‘drift’ at the top of Government and told the Prime Minister it is ‘clear’ he will not lead Labour into the next election.

Notably, he also said the ‘best possible field of candidates’ should have the opportunity to run for the leadership, potentially pitting himself against Andy Burnham, the overwhelming favourite among party members.
