My son, 14, refused to go to school. Now he’s being privately educated at HOME – paid for by our local council. Before you judge our set-up as a solution for snowflakes, read what it’s done for him

Ask my teenage son Max to name his favourite places and he’ll tell you that one of them is school.

There, he gets to learn with a glass of chocolate milk in his hand and his beloved pet tortoise and budgie at his side, with the promise of a dog walk at lunch.

Aged 14, Max is one of a growing number of children who attend private online school from the comfort of their own homes – not to be confused with home educating, where Mum and Dad are the teachers.

The school beamed into his bedroom each day is the £8,800-a-year Minerva
