OPINION – Think this heatwave is bad? It’s got nothing on the summer of 1976

How do the heatwaves we’re experiencing in 2026 compare to 1976? Kirsty McCabe, Meteorologist and Editor of MetMatters at the Royal Meteorological Society explains to Madelaine Dowds:

“This week has been a little bit more like a typical summer, but the one at the end of June wasn’t because it was very hot and very humid and we were breaking temperature records.

“The difference is that the hot humid weather kills people. People are very nostalgic about ’76 being a hot dry summer. It was pretty horrendous.
