A drunk HGV driver swerved across a dual carriageway before being arrested for being six times over limit.

55-year-old Darek Smagiel was stopped by the police with several bottles of whiskey found inside his Iveco HGV lorry.

He provided a roadside breath test and blew 221 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, more than six times the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.

The police stopped the lorry on the A14 at Fenstanton on Monday afternoon.

Smagiel has since been sentenced after members of the public reported his dangerous driving to police.

At Cambridge Magistrates’ Court yesterday, Smagiel, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty
