Just over a year ago, when Jennifer Melle was at rock bottom, her eldest daughter – a nurse, just like her mum – placed a six-week-old puppy in her arms. She hoped that having another life to care for would bring her mother back.

‘She could see me crying, spending all the time in bed. If I went outside, I was having panic attacks, in the supermarket, on the bus, in the street. She wanted me to be happy again,’ says Jennifer.
