Apparently there has been fevered speculation surrounding my absence during the past month. According to the rumour mill, I’ve resigned/been sacked/gone on strike.

In last Friday’s letters page, Mail reader Ken Howell, from Tewkesbury, in Gloucestershire, joked that I was taking more holidays than Beatrice and Eugenie.
