A couple had just crossed the road and were seconds away from being hit by the blast.
Paving slabs and rubble were sent flying into the air just outside the busy car park in Boston, Lincolnshire.
Luckily, no one was injured.
The street was closed as emergency services worked to establish the cause of the fire.
The blaze had started in an underground electrical installation, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service said.
The blaze had extinguished itself by the time firefighters arrived.
