Ferry carrying 270 people capsizes off coast of Cyprus with ‘at least seven dead’ as major rescue operation launched

At least seven people have died after a ferry carrying 270 passengers capsized shortly after departing the coast of northern Cyprus today, with a major rescue operation still under way.

The catamaran-style vessel set off from the port of Kyrenia, also known as Girne at at 11.58am headed for the Turkish port of Tasucu in Mersin province where it was expected to arrive at 5.52pm local time.

Turkish Cypriot coastguard boats and rescue helicopters rushed to the scene in a desperate bid to save people and ambulances ​have ⁠been dispatched to the scene.
