Since the death of her son, Liam, almost two years ago, Nicola Anderson hasn’t been able to throw away his toothbrush. His shoes are still there, too.

‘I can’t bring myself to get rid of them,’ she says. ‘I still expect him to walk in through the door.’

Liam was just 20 when he died from mesothelioma, an incurable cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.
