Skipping meals to fight cancer sounds radical, but new research suggests fasting may revolutionise treatment.

The technique could supercharge the immune system, rewire tumours and make treatments more effective. We’re on the cusp of a major shift in approach, say experts.

A significant advance came in 2024 when a study, in the journal Immunity, found that fasting dramatically strengthens the function of key immune cells called natural killer (NK) cells, making them more effective at destroying tumours.

In general, the more NK cells in a tumour, the better the patient’s prognosis.
