Andy Burnham was left desperately backtracking today after suggesting Scotland can have another independence referendum if there is ‘majority public support’.
The premier appeared to lay out the conditions for a fresh separatist vote north of the border as he was challenged at PMQs.
He indicated that the same rules should apply in Scotland as in Northern Ireland, where it requires a ‘clear consensus in the country’.
Answering SNP MP Chris Law, Mr Burnham said: ‘I would say exactly the same situation in Scotland. I am not aware that there’s a majority of public support for another referendum.
