Putin-backing United Russia party is predicted crushing victory with around 50% of the vote in country’s parliamentary elections, exit polls say

Russia‘s ruling party that is loyal to Vladimir Putin is set for a landslide victory in the latest parliamentary elections, early vote counting indicates.

The United Russia party looks set to take home around 58 percent of the vote, with their closest rival the Communist Party on track for just 14 percent.

The result of the election – with a turnout of 56 percent – was never truly in doubt, because the Kremlin exerts tight control over the voting process.

A credible opposition is non-existent in Russia, with critics of the current regime barred, jailed or exiled.
