’Oh, you have osteopenia in your spine,’ said the nurse monitoring the screen, as the arm of the scanner measuring my bone density made a humming sound.

‘What?’ I retorted loudly.

But this result, which puts me at greater risk of developing osteoporosis – a condition that can lead to fragility fractures, disability and even premature death – had come as a shock.
