Government vows to impose ‘restrictions’ on social media for under-16s

The Government has vowed to impose ‘some form of age or functionality restrictions’ on children aged under 16 using social media. 

Education Minister Olivia Bailey made the pledge on Monday as a consultation over the harms of social media on children continued.

She promised that measures will be imposed regardless of the result of the concession, which came amid pressure from the House of Lords over the issue. 

Led by ex-Tory education minister Lord Nash, peers voted four times to press the Commons into accepting a ban. 

The Labour Government had previously only suggested methods which could be implemented as part of the ban –
