A barrister has been fined £1,000 after turning up to court drunk before collapsing and being rushed to hospital in an ambulance.
James Hankinson, a self-employed barrister, was slurring his speech, smelled strongly of alcohol and had ‘red eyes’ when he arrived at Maidstone Combined Court for a hearing in March last year.
The family law specialist later collapsed in the courthouse and was taken to Maidstone hospital.
His client’s hearing had to be adjourned on the day of the incident, but it was rescheduled, with Mr Hankinson replaced by a more senior barrister.
