Thousands of homes are evacuated after unexploded WW2 bomb discovered in Plymouth

More than 1,200 homes in Plymouth have been evacuated after a World War Two bomb was discovered.

Residents face spending up to two nights away from their homes after a 400-metre cordon in the Southway area was extended.

Around 1,260 homes have been affected so far after the unexploded wartime device was found on a building site on Wednesday afternoon.

It is the latest evacuation caused by bombs dropped by the Nazis in Plymouth and the surrounding areas during WW2.

In February 2024, the discovery of a live Nazi warhead in a suburban garden led to one of the largest peacetime evacuations in UK history.
