The traveller Bank Holiday land grabs: Army of workers using diggers and lorries drag caravans into villages across Kent and Essex – as councils close for long weekend

Travellers used diggers and lorries to drag caravans into villages in the south east of England in another bank holiday land grab.

Patches of the countryside in Essex and Kent were the latest areas to be targeted at the weekend as council offices closed, much to the dismay of locals.

Industrial diggers worked through most of the May bank holiday weekend to lay rubble on land in Hoath, Canterbury, as travellers ignored a stop notice issued by Canterbury City Council on Friday.

A hedgerow was flattened to make way for an entrance, and a static caravan was already in place by Sunday.

A planning application
