Oxford University students revolt over ban on transgender rowers entering the women’s Boat Race

Oxford students are rebelling after the university’s boat club banned transgender athletes from entering women’s races.

Students are up in arms over the club’s new policy, brought in after British Rowing’s rulebook was changed to say ‘only people who are assigned female at birth will be eligible to compete in the Women’s category’.

The rules, introduced in August 2023, add that trans and non-binary towers can compete in the Open category instead.

If they had not done, the Oxford University Boat Club (OUBC) said it would have been deregistered as a university sports club and unable to run competitions.
