Homeowners with mortgages have been hit harder by inflation than renters, according to figures released from the Office for National Statistics.
Overall, household costs inflation was 3.6 per cent in the year to March, according to ONS. This inflation rate tracks the rate at which the price of goods and services such as food, housing, energy, and transport increase over time.
But analysis of the data shows that, over the last five years, those with a mortgage have seen their costs rise at a faster rate than renters.
Mortgaged homeowners have seen 37.6 per cent inflation, compared with 30.7 per cent for private renters.
