What a difference a week makes! Giant hail, torrential rain and thunderstorms batter London after 35C heatwave

This time last week, Britain was sweating through its hottest day in May on record as temperatures soared beyond 35C during the unprecedented spring heatwave.

But the UK is now being deluged by a washout start to summer which officially began yesterday – with London being hit by heavy rain, giant hail and thunderstorms today.

Holly Willoughby was among those getting soaked during heavy rain in the capital this afternoon, posting a clip on Instagram captioned: ‘Summer’s over then?’
