Swimmer dies as red ‘extreme heat’ warning extends into tomorrow: Fire engine explodes, thousands face hosepipe ban and supermarket freezers break down in hottest June ever

A swimmer has died in the heatwave as a hosepipe ban was activated today for nearly one million Brits and even higher record-breaking temperatures were forecast.

The 50-year-old man required medical help after going into the sea during a visit to Aberavon beach in Port Talbot, South Wales, at about 4.30pm yesterday. Coastguard personnel performed CPR but the man from nearby Cilfrew died at the scene.

It comes as the Met Office extended a rare red extreme heat warning for ‘population-wide adverse health effects’ and a ‘danger to life’ by another day until tomorrow.
