Warily answering the door of his Las Vegas hotel suite, the undercover agent expected to find himself face-to-face with a seasoned criminal. 

It was April 2014 and the agent and his partner, who was also in the room, were posing as drug traffickers.

They had set a trap for a man they knew only as ‘Bill’ who advertised his money-laundering services on the dark web and with whom, until now, they had communicated only via an encrypted app.

Fresh-faced, confident and smartly dressed, Bill breezed into the room with an outstretched hand.

What surprised the US investigators above all was his age and accent.
