Death of the manual gearbox as 92% of new cars ordered in Britain this year are automatic

Sales of new cars with manual transmissions have sunk to a record low as Britons continue to steer away from changing gear by hand.

Fewer than one in 12 (7.9 per cent) new models delivered in the first six months of the year have a gearstick, according to a new report.

This is down from 14 per cent of orders in the first half of last year and 21 per cent in 2024, says car buying and selling site Carwow.
