British pupil, 17, dies on school trip in Malawi ‘after going missing in lake’

A 17-year-old private schoolboy has drowned while snorkelling on a school trip to Malawi.

Eugene Enoch Kwon, who was a pupil at the £30,000-a-year Hampton School in London, disappeared on Tuesday while swimming with classmates in Lake Malawi at Cape Maclear.

He was found by divers under the water and was taken to Monkey Bay Community Hospital for treatment, where he was pronounced dead.

Eugene’s cause of death was suffocation due to drowning, police said.

Hampton School is a private school for boys in Richmond upon Thames, south-west London.

A spokesperson for the school confirmed that one of its students had died on the school camping
