Bungling Home Office admits catalogue of costly errors including mistakenly reimbursing migrants £19million that they can’t claw back

Tens of millions of taxpayers’ money has been wasted due to blunders involving migrant schemes.

Officials gave incorrect refunds totalling at least £18.7million to migrants who had paid a surcharge towards the NHS, the Home Office’s annual report showed.

Foreign nationals were reimbursed too much money – and the sums are unlikely to be recovered.

In a further gaffe, the Home Office spent £22.9million on an asylum hotel that was never used.

The department signed a nine-month contract on the Atrium Hotel in Hounslow, west London, in August 2025.
