How UK’s poshest garden centre is cashing in on ‘old junk’: Rusted tables and paint-peel chairs you might overlook at a car boot sale go for up to four figures at Surrey nurseries loved by celebrities

Browsing the furniture section at upmarket Petersham Nurseries, the bougie garden centre that sits just a meadow away from the Thames in South West London, you might be forgiven for thinking you’d inadvertently wandered into a breakers yard. 

Amongst the bedding plants, shrubs and climbers on sale, shoppers are greeted by the site of rusting metal everywhere, with tables and chairs, mirrors and urns of the kind that might raise a sneer at a car boot sale nestled amongst the greenery. 

From each of them hangs a carefully tied small paper tag, emblazoned with the nurseries’ crest – featuring two hand-drawn elephants
