As Ljubisa Karovic sat back in seat 11F on Ryanair flight FR1879 from Thessaloniki to Memmingen, he fastened his seat belt and, as he often does during flights, quickly and effortlessly drifted off to sleep.

It had been a relaxing holiday in the Greek sun, he had been given a window seat without paying an upgrade, and he was looking forward to arriving in the city in the south of Germany where he would be a guest at a surprise birthday party for his younger brother.
