Andy Burnham’s dithering over early release of prisoners ‘prolonging the torture’ of victims and their families

Andy Burnham has been warned he’s ‘prolonging the torture’ of victims and their families by dithering over Labour’s early release of prisoners.

Claire Waxman, the victims’ commissioner for England and Wales, accused the Prime Minister of creating ‘chaos and uncertainty’ in the justice system by ‘flip-flopping’.

Under initial plans, some 6,000 criminals were expected to be released early under the new Sentencing Act as part of the Government’s bid to tackle jail overcrowding.

Shortly after he took office, Mr Burnham ordered an urgent review of the scheme amid public outrage at the killers of PC Andrew Harper being eligible for early release.
