One person is dead and hundreds have fallen ill in a major salmonella outbreak being blamed on imported eggs.
Issuing a national alert, the UK Health Security Agency suggested that those affected had become sick after eating in cafes and restaurants.
The agency confirmed 207 cases – with ages ranging from one to 90 – in the past 12 months. But experts warned they were ‘just the tip of the iceberg’ because many cases will have gone unreported.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said investigations had identified links to imported eggs ‘mainly used by food service and catering establishments such as restaurants’.
