A prisoner thought to be the longest serving inmate in US history has died aged 101.
Francis Clifford Smith, of Connecticut, was given his last meal eight times before being cleared of a death sentence. He had been sentenced to death in 1950 for the murder of a night watchman in Greenwich. He was 25 at the time.
Smith’s life was repeatedly spared, including after witnesses recanted their statements and a separate inmate confessed to the murder, the BBC reported.
