Remember yesteryear, when what constituted a good hotel stay was a comfy bed, a decent breakfast and an amiable host who didn’t stomp around like Basil Fawlty?

Budget always played its part, of course. Décor and facilities would be grander according to how much you could afford to pay but mostly, whether it was a four-star in Torremolinos or a Torquay B&B, booking a hotel was a simple transaction centred around letting a location (and hopefully the sun) shine.
