Birmingham hopes to become England’s first 20mph city as the ‘anti-motorist’ council moves to lower the speed limit on hundreds of roads. 

The Liberal Democrat, Green and independent-led city council wants to stop cars ‘dominating’ the streets and is instead encouraging residents to walk and cycle.

However critics have said the local authority is ‘determined to make it harder’ for people to get around the city, with Reform UK arguing the proposals are ‘anti-motorist’. 

Birmingham was once known as Britain’s ‘motor city’ owing to its vast car production and pioneering road designs.
