Human rights chiefs were hit with a furious backlash last night after ruling Britain wasn’t generous enough to migrants.
The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) watchdog said ministers weren’t doing enough to prevent asylum seekers falling into poverty and that more should be given access to benefits to comply with UN standards.
It also criticised the government for scrapping a programme designed to help refugees write CVs and find jobs.
But the intervention sparked a furious backlash, with critics saying hiking benefits would create an even greater ‘pull factor’ which could encourage more dangerous small boat crossings.
