Tucked away behind a slew of coffee bars, tech start-ups and trendy eateries stands what must surely be one of London’s most undesirable addresses. It is neither house nor flat, but a tented encampment under a graffiti-covered bridge sandwiched between two railway lines in Shoreditch.

Little more than a mile from the City, local historians fancy that Jack the Ripper used this pocket of the capital as a cut-through when he was terrorising nearby Whitechapel in the 1880s. Scenes from the horror film Omen III were shot here in more recent times.
