Church magazine editor prosecuted for picking up deer roadkill to take home and eat says ordeal ‘entirely unnecessary’

An editor of a church magazine has been charged with illegally picking up roadkill to take home to eat.

Guy Carpenter, 42, spotted the dead deer on the central reservation of the A66 near Barnard Castle, County Durham, pulled his vehicle over and hoisted the animal on to his shoulders.

But he was stopped by passing officers who activated their vehicle’s blue emergency lights and told him he was breaking the law by moving the deer.

Following the incident on June 7, he received a court summons in the post and appeared at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court on Monday, charged with removing the carcass
