The heavyweight contenders battling to be crowned during America’s Fat Bear Week have been announced.
The much-loved contest, running from September 22 to 29, pits the brown bears of Alaska‘s Katmai National Park & Preserve against each other as they bulk up for winter hibernation.
A total of 11 adult bears are competing this year, ranging from formidable former champions to hungry newcomers hoping to seize the crown.
They include a gigantic male with a permanently broken jaw, a fiercely protective mother and an aging former king of the river attempting a remarkable comeback.
