Vote to keep both houses of Congress Republican in November’s mid-term elections, President Trump told the American people this week, and every adult citizen in the land will get a $5,000 (£3,700) bung. Even for Trump, this is an extraordinary piece of electoral payola. To me, it smacks of desperation.
I can only conclude that he’s now listening to the wiser heads around him in the White House who’ve been warning for some time that he was in danger of losing the House of Representatives and the Senate.
