A Home Office ‘blunder’ involving crested newts could halt plans for a proposed asylum camp near an Oxfordshire village that has voted to leave the UK.
Numerous protected wildlife species are located on or next to the former military site near Piddington set to house more than 1,200 male asylum seekers, according to records uncovered by campaigners opposing the plans.
An ecological assessment of the area undertaken by the Home Office submitted as part of its planning application claimed there was no evidence of protected newts, bats or reptiles on the site stopping the camp from going ahead.
