Embattled German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has scheduled a crisis meeting ahead of two state elections in which gains for the main hard-Right party could threaten his leadership.
Mr Merz, 70, has called the emergency session with senior figures in his centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party to discuss the first results as they come in from the regional polls in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The chancellor, who has been in power for 16 months, has also cleared his calendar for the following days and skipped a trip to the UN General Assembly to deal with potential aftershocks from the votes.
