Kim’s descent began almost innocently. She was looking to ‘let off some steam’ one evening in March, when her boyfriend offered her some ‘GHB’ – a drug she hadn’t heard of before. Kim took it, thinking, she says now, it would give her ‘a little buzz’.
GHB – gamma-hydroxybutyrate, sometimes dubbed ‘G’, ‘Gina’ or ‘liquid ecstasy’ – is a powerful sedative that produces a heightened feeling of euphoria and confidence.
‘It was so much better than getting drunk,’ Kim, aged 21 and based near Lytham, Lancashire, recalls.
