Five-year-old girl is in an induced coma after she and nine others were hit by a P-plater while cheering on the Newcastle Knights – as driver, 18, is arrested

A five-year-old girl who was among 10 people struck by a P-plater as they cheered on the Newcastle Knights is an induced coma and will undergo multiple surgeries.

The 18-year-old driver ploughed his BMW into a crowd of footy fans waving off the Knights in their team bus ahead of the NRL Grand Final on Saturday morning in Newcastle, north of Sydney. 

Emergency services were called to the Newcastle Link Road roundabout on Transfield Avenue at about 9.30am following reports that a vehicle had struck people standing on the pavement after driving ‘erratically’.
