Marco Rubio has said the withdrawal of US bombers from RAF Fairford was not ‘directly tied’ to the suspected terror plot at the base. 

The US secretary of state said it is ‘not unusual’ to see the ‘movement of assets to different parts of the world’, while Downing Street insisted the base is safe amid new security concerns.

The Pentagon confirmed yesterday that aircraft which were being stationed at the Gloucestershire base had been ‘redeployed to their home stations in the United States’.

The move follows the arrest of six individuals over the past week in connection with a suspected terror plot targeting the base.
