A ‘polar vortex collapse’ could plunge parts of the US into bitter cold as forecasts point to a potentially record-breaking disruption above the Arctic within days.
If the winds reverse as forecast, it would mark the earliest such major breakdown in records dating back to 1959, beating the previous earliest date of November 28.
MIT research scientist Judah Cohen told FOX Weather: ‘This will be, I think almost undoubtedly, the largest, earliest disruption of the polar vortex on record.’
For Americans, any effects could emerge in late November or early December, with areas east of the Rocky Mountains potentially facing colder, wintry conditions.
