Government ‘prepare for potential bird flu outbreak’ as they invest millions into vaccine trials

Thousands of people in the UK are expected to receive a bird flu vaccine in the coming weeks, as officials brace for the next potential global pandemic. 

A government-backed trial will see 4,000 participants in the UK and US vaccinated against H5N1 bird flu under the supervision of the US’ National Institute for Health and Care Research.  

This particular strain of the virus – whilst not yet easily transmissible between people – is ‘evolving and spreading’ in animals, with experts warning that human-to-human transmission must be treated ‘as a real possibility’.
