The back door into Britain: How Common Travel Area allowing free movement between NI and Ireland can be exploited by migrants with authorities clueless

Labour ministers are facing demands to clampdown on abuse of the Common Travel Area by asylum seekers after a Sudanese man was charged with attempted murder over a knife attack in Belfast.

The CTA has been in place for more than a century, stemming from the creation of the Irish Free State, the precursor to the Republic of Ireland.

It allows Irish citizens and UK citizens to travel, work, live and study anywhere on the island of Ireland.

But warnings have been raised that following Brexit it is being exploited by asylum seekers who would otherwise not be allowed into the UK.
