Cod and chips rises to above £11 a portion for first time as soaring cost of fish, potatoes, oil and energy forces shop owners to hike prices and diversify menus

A ‘chippy tea’ was once a reliably cheap takeaway option at the end of the week for Britain’s hard-working families and an easy way to escape the kitchen.

But a portion of cod and chips now costs a whopping £11.41 on average – while haddock and chips is only slightly less at £10.29, according to a new report.

Industry body Seafish said rising costs for fish, potatoes, oil and energy are putting pressure on owners of the 7,210 fish and chip shops operating across the UK.

Many of them are either diversifying their menus with items such as kebabs, pizzas, burgers, chicken wings
