Explosion at restaurant in Moscow kills at least three and injures 15 others – after being closed for ‘private banquet’

At least three people have been killed and another 15 people injured in a huge explosion at a restaurant in Moscow.

The blast took place outside the upmarket Balzi Rossi eatery in Kudrinskaya Square, just over a mile from the Kremlin, at around 8.10pm local time today.

The restaurant’s website said the venue had been closed on Saturday for a private ‘banquet’ event.

Initial reports blamed a gas explosion in the restaurant’s kitchen but investigators are now examining whether it could have been a bomb on the terrace.

Russian state TV suggested the explosion could have been caused by a gas canister detonating.
