Fears have been raised about a surge in so-called ‘garden grabbing’ after Angela Rayner overhauled planning rules.
The Communities Secretary has relaxed restrictions on building new homes in the gardens of other houses.
The update means limits on the size and appearance of homes built in back gardens could be circumvented.
The developments previously needed to ‘be consistent with the overall street scene’, but this can now be overruled in some circumstances. Thus includes cases where it is ‘appropriate to have larger buildings’, such as on street corners.
