Families of pilots killed by dangerous driver blast ‘appalling’ government after anguish of being left waiting months fearing he’d have jail term cut

Families of two pilots killed by a trucker driving dangerously today said it was ‘appalling’ that they were left waiting for months fearing he would have his sentence cut to free-up prison places.

Bereaved relatives of Ryanair pilots Matthew Greenhalgh and Jamie Fernandes are angry the policy was only changed to exclude killers after a national outcry – and that they only found out through media reports.

Both families had been sent letters in June telling them Anthony Burns, 63, may have his sentence ‘recalculated’ under moves to free up prison cells – only five months after he was jailed for 10
