Residents of a tiny village have voted overwhelmingly to declare independence from Britain in a symbolic referendum to protest against plans to house 1,200 asylum seekers at a former military base nearby.
Piddington’s parish council announced the result this morning after the sleepy Oxfordshire settlement went to the polls yesterday to decide whether it should secede from the UK.
With 312 votes there was a 92 per cent turnout, with 285 villagers backed independence with only 26 voting against it and one spoiled ballot paper.
